An iron stair baluster with a square solid bar shaft and a double basket pattern — two woven decorative baskets spaced along the center of the spindle. Balusters of this type fill the space between the stair treads or shoe rail and the underside of the handrail, providing the infill required of a guard on open stairs, landings and balconies.

Iron balusters are used both in new stair construction and as a retrofit for existing wood spindles. In a remodel the old baluster is cut out and the iron replacement is set into the same tread hole, then fastened at the handrail with an epoxy or adhesive bond, often with a shoe and shoe cover at the base to hide the hole. Because the shaft is plain bar above and below the decorative section, the spindle can be trimmed to the required length on site to suit tread rise and rake angle.

The square profile matches other square-bar balusters, newels and shoe hardware, so plain and patterned spindles can be mixed in a run to set up a repeating rhythm along the stair.
