1/2 pt. PVC Cement
PVC solvent cement is used to join rigid PVC pipe and fittings. Rather than acting as a glue, the solvents in the cement soften the mating surfaces of the pipe and the socket so the two plastic surfaces fuse; once the solvents flash off, the joint is a continuous piece of PVC rather than two parts held together by an adhesive layer.
The can ships with an applicator dauber fitted to the underside of the lid, which is sized to spread cement inside the fitting socket and around the pipe end. Standard practice is to cut the pipe square, deburr and chamfer the end, dry-fit the joint, clean and prime the surfaces, then apply cement to both halves, push the pipe fully home with a quarter turn and hold it until the joint sets.
Cement of this type is formulated for PVC only. CPVC and ABS take their own cements, and transition joints between dissimilar plastics call for a transition cement or a mechanical connection.
Key Features
- Solvent cement that chemically fuses PVC pipe to PVC fittings into a single mass of plastic
- Applicator dauber attached to the can lid for coating pipe ends and fitting sockets
- Formulated for rigid PVC pipe and fittings; used after a compatible primer on pressure work
- Sets quickly, so joints are assembled immediately after the cement is applied
- Half-pint can suits service work and small runs where a quart would skin over before it is used
Applications
- Solvent-welding PVC DWV drain, waste and vent piping
- Joining PVC pressure pipe and fittings in irrigation and water service lines
- Pool and spa plumbing runs built from rigid PVC
- PVC conduit and sleeve assemblies
- Repair and replacement work on existing PVC systems
