Red oak board stock in a nominal one-by-six profile, surfaced and sold by the piece for interior trim and finish carpentry. Red oak is a ring-porous hardwood with an open grain and a pronounced cathedral figure on flat-sawn faces, which is why it remains the default species for site-built casing, base and shelving in North American work.

The species machines and sands predictably, holds screws and fasteners well, and takes stain and clear finish evenly once the open pores are filled or sealed. Boards are typically milled to a surfaced thickness under the nominal call-out, so lay out joinery from the actual measured thickness rather than the nominal size.

As an interior hardwood with no preservative treatment, it should be stored flat and acclimated to the conditioned space before it is cut and installed.
