A privacy-function lockset intended for metal doors, sold as a single unit. Privacy trim is the bed-and-bath function: the lock is operated from the inside only, by a thumbturn or push button in the interior knob or rose, and it has no key cylinder on the outside face.

The exterior side carries an emergency release — a slot or small hole that lets a coin, flat screwdriver or tool unlock the door from the corridor side without a key. Both levers or knobs retract the latch freely at all other times, so the door is never locked against the occupant from the inside.

Hardware made for hollow metal and steel doors is built to suit factory-prepped door and frame bores and a metal strike prep, which differs from the shallower prep common to wood doors. Confirm the existing bore, backset and door thickness before ordering replacement trim.
