A chain door guard is a surface-mounted secondary security device for a swinging entry door. A short length of chain runs between a plate fastened to the door casing and a slotted track fastened to the door face; with the chain engaged, the door can be opened only a few inches, wide enough to see and speak to a caller or accept a small item, but not wide enough to admit a person. Sliding the chain's ball end out of the keyhole slot releases it and lets the door swing normally.

This unit carries a dull chrome finish, a soft satin plating that reads as low-gloss grey rather than mirror bright and suits the brushed nickel and satin chrome lock trim commonly specified on apartment and multifamily entry doors. It is a keyless guard, operated only from the inside, and is intended as a supplement to a deadbolt rather than a replacement for one.

Installation is straightforward surface work: the two plates are screwed to the door face and the stop or casing with the supplied fasteners, set so the chain track sits level with the door plate and the chain has slack to travel. Solid wood or blocked hollow-metal jambs hold the fasteners best; hollow-core doors and thin trim may need backing.

Key Features

  • Chain-type door guard that limits the opening of an inswinging door while allowing it to be cracked for visual identification of a caller
  • Dull chrome plated finish, a low-lustre satin appearance that coordinates with satin chrome and brushed nickel door trim
  • Steel construction throughout the plate, track and chain
  • Keyless design, engaged and released from the interior side only
  • Ball-end chain drops into a keyhole slot in the track and slides clear to release, with no tools required for daily use
  • Surface mounted with screws to the door face and the jamb or casing, so no mortising or boring of the door is needed
  • Works alongside an existing knob, lever or deadbolt as a secondary restraint rather than replacing the primary lock
  • Supplied carded for retail display, sold individually

Applications

  • Apartment and condominium entry doors where a resident needs to identify a caller before opening fully
  • Single-family front and side entry doors as a supplement to the deadbolt
  • Hotel, motel and rooming house guest room doors
  • Office suite and back-of-house doors that stay locked during business hours
  • Retrofit security upgrades on existing inswinging wood or hollow-metal doors
  • Interior doors where an opening needs to be restricted without adding a keyed lock
