Drip edge is the L-shaped metal flashing installed along the eaves and rakes of a roof to direct runoff away from the fascia and into the gutter. The short vertical leg hangs over the roof edge and kicks water clear of the wood behind it, while the wider flange lies on the deck beneath the underlayment at the rake and over it at the eave, depending on the assembly.

This profile carries a brown finish, which lets the exposed edge read as trim against brown fascia, soffit and gutter work rather than as bare metal. It is sold in individual lengths and is lapped end to end as the run is built out along the roof perimeter.

Without drip edge, water tracks back under the shingle course and wets the deck edge and fascia board, which is the usual starting point for rot at the eave.
