Simpson Strong-Tie H2.5A Hurricane Tie
The H2.5A is a single-sided sheet-metal hurricane tie from Simpson Strong-Tie, used to tie a rafter or truss down to the wall top plate so roof framing and wall framing act as one assembly. Simpson describes it as a connector for moderate loads at the rafter/truss-to-top-plate connection that, as part of a continuous load path, resists both uplift and lateral forces.
The tie is formed from galvanized steel with pre-punched holes in both legs, and it is symmetrical, so one part serves both the left and right side of a member and there is no handed version to stock or sort on the roof. Fastening is with the nails specified in the manufacturer's literature, and Simpson also approves the H2.5A for installation with Strong-Drive SD Connector screws.
Hurricane ties of this kind are installed per the manufacturer's instructions with every specified hole filled; Simpson notes that ties do not replace solid blocking, and that when a tie is placed on the side of a plated truss opposite the truss plate, fasteners should not be driven through the truss plate from behind.
Key Features
- Single-sided hurricane tie for the rafter or truss to top-plate connection
- Resists both uplift and lateral forces as part of a continuous load path
- Symmetrical design eliminates the need for separate right- and left-hand parts
- Formed from 18-gauge galvanized steel
- Approved by the manufacturer for installation with Strong-Drive SD Connector screws in addition to specified nails
- Pre-punched fastener holes in both legs so the connector is nailed off without layout or drilling
- On 2x trusses the manufacturer calls for ties of the same model installed diagonally across from each other
- Bent sheet-steel body wraps from the face of the rafter or truss onto the plate, transferring load through fasteners in both members
Applications
- Rafter-to-top-plate connections in stick-framed roofs
- Truss-to-double-top-plate connections in residential and light commercial framing
- Continuous load path detailing from roof framing down into wall framing
- Retrofitting roof-to-wall connections on existing buildings
- Connecting 2x joists that bear over a perpendicular beam
- General wood-to-wood connections where one framing member crosses another
- Roof framing work in high-wind and coastal regions where uplift resistance is detailed by the designer
