A solid oak stair tread milled for use as the horizontal walking surface of a staircase. Oak is the standard species for residential treads because of its density, closed grain and resistance to denting under repeated foot traffic.

Treads of this width are sized to cover a full run with the nosing projecting past the riser below, and the extra length allows the installer to cut to the stairwell opening, mitre a return end, or split a single piece across shorter runs. The blank is supplied unfinished so it can be sanded, stained and coated on site to match existing flooring or railing.

Stock thickness in the 5/4 nominal range is typical for closed and open stringer stairs where the tread bears on stringers or is glued and screwed to a rough tread beneath.
