Oak 3-1/4 in. x 3-1/4 in. x 50 in. Newel Post, No. 4274
A newel post is the structural anchor of a stair balustrade, taking the lateral load of the handrail and balusters at the bottom of a flight, at landings and at changes in direction. This one is turned and machined in oak, a dense closed-grain hardwood long used for stair parts because it resists denting and takes stain cleanly.
The 4274 pattern number identifies the profile, so the post can be matched to handrail, balusters and fittings from the same stair-part series. Left unfinished, it can be stained to match existing oak treads and rails or painted after priming.
Installation is typically over a doweled or pinned base into the floor framing or into the top of a bullnose starting step, with the handrail mortised or fastened to the post face with a rail bolt.
Key Features
- Solid oak construction, a dense hardwood that holds fastenings and resists impact damage in traffic areas
- Machined to the 4274 stair-part profile for matching to companion handrail and baluster patterns
- Square cross-section shaft suitable for mortised rail connections and rail bolt hardware
- Supplied unfinished so it can be sanded, stained or primed and painted on site
- Serves as the load-bearing terminal for a balustrade rather than a decorative infill member
- Closed, even grain accepts wiping stain without the blotching common to softwoods
- Sold individually by the piece
