Starter strip shingles are the first course laid at the eave and up the rake before any field shingles go down. GAF supplies them as pre-cut asphalt strips in a bundle, so the crew does not have to field-cut three-tab shingles, reverse them and hope the adhesive lands where it belongs.

Each strip is a fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingle with a factory-applied adhesive bead positioned near the lower edge. Once the first course of field shingles is nailed over it, that adhesive bonds the shingle tabs down at the perimeter, which is where wind uplift begins on a steep-slope roof. The strips also cover the joints between the first course of shingles so water shedding off the roof cannot find a path to the deck.

Installation follows the usual sequence: underlayment and eave protection first, starter strip set flush to or slightly overhanging the drip edge, then the field shingles starting at the eave. The same strip is run up the rakes on jobs where rake protection is specified.
