Stair nosing is the protective edge trim fitted to the leading lip of a step. It caps the exposed corner where the tread meets the riser, absorbs the wear that concentrates on that edge, and gives a defined visual line at the front of each step. This piece is finished in silver with a fluted face.

The fluted profile is a series of raised ridges running across the walking surface. Those ridges break up the smooth plane at the nose of the tread, which is the point where a foot is most likely to slip, and they also hide scuffing better than a flat face. Nosing of this kind is normally set into place with construction adhesive, screws through countersunk holes, or both, and is cut to the width of the step with a mitre saw and a non-ferrous blade.

Because the nosing is an applied piece, it can be used both on new stairs and as a repair to an existing set, covering a chipped or worn tread edge without replacing the tread.
