Solid oak stair tread stock, milled to the thickness normally specified for residential treads and supplied in a long length so treads can be cut to the exact rise-and-run of the staircase. Oak is a dense, close-grained hardwood that holds up to foot traffic on stairs and takes stain and clear finish evenly.

The board is dressed on the faces and has a rounded nosing edge on one long edge, the usual profile for a finished tread that overhangs the riser below. Working from one long piece lets a stair builder cut several treads from a single board and keep grain and colour consistent up the flight.

Treads are typically installed on stringers or over a rough-framed stair, glued and fastened, then sanded and finished in place. Ends can be mitred or returned where the tread is exposed at an open side.
