Thinset mortar is a cement-based adhesive used to bond ceramic, porcelain, stone and mosaic tile to prepared substrates. It is supplied as a dry powder that is mixed with water (or a latex admix, where the product allows) to a stiff, trowelable consistency, then combed out with a notched trowel to form ridges that collapse under the tile and give full contact bedding.

This blend is white rather than grey. White mortar is the usual choice under marble, glass, translucent porcelain and other light or light-transmitting tile, where a grey body can shadow through the tile face or tint white grout at the joints.

The material is sold in a 50 lb. bag. Coverage depends on trowel notch size, tile format and substrate flatness, and mixed mortar has a limited working and open time, so batches should be sized to what can be set before the surface skins over.
