Red oak is a domestic open-grained hardwood with pronounced cathedral figure and a pinkish to light reddish brown tone. It machines and sands cleanly, holds screws and glue joints well, and takes stain and clear finishes evenly, which is why it remains the standard choice for stained trim packages and built-ins.

Nominal one-inch stock finishes closer to three-quarters of an inch after surfacing, in line with standard hardwood lumber practice. As an open-pore species, red oak benefits from filler or multiple coats where a glass-smooth painted or varnished surface is wanted.
