Furring channel is a cold-formed steel hat-shaped section used to create a level plane for attaching gypsum board, plaster lath or panel finishes. The raised web stands the finish material off the structure, leaving a cavity for insulation, wiring or minor irregularities in the substrate.

This piece is rolled in 20 gauge steel and cut to a 10 ft. length. The flanges at each side are fastened to masonry, concrete, wood framing or steel framing members, and the finish material is screwed to the face of the web.

Because the channel is furnished as a plain rolled section, it can be cut to length on site with snips or a chop saw and lapped where longer runs are needed.
