Red oak is a dense, open-grained North American hardwood that machines cleanly, holds a crisp profile edge, and takes stain and clear finish predictably, which is why it remains the default choice where trim is meant to be finished natural rather than painted.
The stock is substantial in section rather than a thin applied casing, so it suits applications that need a piece with real thickness behind the profile. It cuts, mitres and returns with standard carbide tooling, and it accepts finish nails well when pre-drilled at ends to avoid splitting the open grain.
Like all solid hardwood trim, it should be allowed to acclimate to the conditioned interior space before installation and finished on all faces to keep moisture movement even.
