Green rigid foam board is extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation, a closed-cell foam plastic panel used wherever a continuous layer of insulation has to sit in or against an assembly. The board is dense enough to handle on a jobsite without crumbling, cuts cleanly with a utility knife and straightedge, and can be scored and snapped to fit around framing, penetrations and footings.

Because the cell structure is closed, XPS absorbs very little water and holds its insulating value in damp locations, which is why it is the common choice for below-grade and below-slab work where fibrous insulation would not survive. Boards are typically installed in butted courses and held with foam-compatible adhesive, plate fasteners, or simply the weight of the slab or backfill above them, with joints staggered to limit thermal bridging.

Thicker boards like this one are used where a single layer has to carry the whole insulating load of the assembly - under a slab pour, against a foundation wall before backfill, or as a continuous exterior layer outboard of the sheathing. As with all foam plastic insulation, interior installations are covered by a finish material rather than left exposed.
