A marble saddle is a solid stone threshold set in a doorway or at the transition between two floor finishes. It bridges the gap where tile meets wood, carpet or an adjoining tile field, covers the exposed edges of both materials and takes the traffic wear that would otherwise fall on a cut tile edge.

This piece is cut from white marble with polished faces and eased edges, the usual pattern for bathroom and closet door openings. Saddles are bedded in thinset or mortar over the subfloor at the door jamb line and are commonly used at a shower or tub curb as well, where the stone forms the top of the dam and sheds water back toward the drain side.

Marble is a natural stone, so veining, tone and background colour vary from piece to piece. Material can be cut down on site with a wet saw and a continuous-rim diamond blade, and the cut end honed or polished to match.
