No. 15 asphalt-saturated felt is the traditional organic or fiberglass mat sheet saturated with asphalt and supplied in rolls. It is installed over a roof deck ahead of shingles as a secondary water-shedding layer and a separation sheet between the deck and the finish roofing.

The sheet is rolled out horizontally from the eave up, lapped shingle-fashion so water runs over each seam, and fastened with roofing nails, cap nails or staples depending on the deck and local practice. The lighter No. 15 weight is the common choice under asphalt shingle work, where No. 30 is reserved for heavier or steeper assemblies.

Beyond roofing, felt paper is widely used as a slip sheet and a weather-resistive layer behind siding, stucco lath and masonry veneer, and as a temporary dry-in while a building is being closed up.
