5-1-2-in-x-55-in-recessed-panel-box-newel-oak-o4191r
5-1/2 in. x 55 in. Recessed Panel Box Newel, Oak

A box newel is the primary anchor post in a stair balustrade, carrying the handrail at the bottom of a flight, at landings and at turns. Unlike a turned newel machined from a solid blank, a box newel is built up as a hollow four-sided post, which keeps the weight down on a large-section post and allows it to be sleeved over a framing member or fastened down to the floor and stringer with a newel anchor or lag hardware.

This one is made up in oak with recessed flat panels worked into the faces, a traditional profile that suits Craftsman, Colonial and transitional stair work. The square section gives a flat, full-width surface for handrail and fitting attachment, and the top is left to be finished with a separate newel cap.

Oak is the standard species for site-finished stair parts: it is hard enough to take the abuse a newel gets at the foot of a stair, and the open grain takes stain and clear finish predictably so the post can be matched to treads, rail and flooring.

Key Features

Oak construction, ready for stain or clear finish to match adjoining stair parts and flooring

Recessed panel detail on the faces for a traditional built-up newel appearance

Hollow box construction, lighter than a solid post of the same section and able to be sleeved over a structural member

Square section presents flat faces for handrail, fitting and rosette attachment

Top left open for a separate newel cap, allowing cap style to be chosen to suit the balustrade

Installed with newel anchor hardware, lag bolts or a framed-in mounting block

Applications

Starting newel at the bottom step of a stair flight

Landing and intermediate turn newels in a continuous balustrade

Balcony and overlook railing posts on upper floors

Traditional and Craftsman-style stair remodels using site-finished oak parts

Terminating post for volute, goosene or straight handrail runs

Product Details

Product Type: Box newel post

Style: Recessed panel

Material: Oak

Section: 5-1/2 in. square

Length: 55 in.

Finish: Unfinished, ready to stain or paint

Sold By: Each

Specifications

Dimensions

5-1/2" x 55"

Material

Oak

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/7743/4195/files/5-1-2-in-x-55-in-recessed-panel-box-newel-oak-o4191r.webp?v=1790259857
