gaf-120-ft-starter-strip-shingles-gafs
GAF 120 ft. Starter Strip Shingles

Starter strip shingles are the first course laid at the eave and up the rake before any field shingles go down. GAF supplies them as pre-cut asphalt strips in a bundle, so the crew does not have to field-cut three-tab shingles, reverse them and hope the adhesive lands where it belongs.

Each strip is a fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingle with a factory-applied adhesive bead positioned near the lower edge. Once the first course of field shingles is nailed over it, that adhesive bonds the shingle tabs down at the perimeter, which is where wind uplift begins on a steep-slope roof. The strips also cover the joints between the first course of shingles so water shedding off the roof cannot find a path to the deck.

Installation follows the usual sequence: underlayment and eave protection first, starter strip set flush to or slightly overhanging the drip edge, then the field shingles starting at the eave. The same strip is run up the rakes on jobs where rake protection is specified.

Key Features

Pre-cut starter course eliminates cutting and reversing field shingles at the eaves and rakes

Factory-applied adhesive positioned along the lower edge to bond the first course of shingles

Seals the perimeter of the roof, where wind uplift and shingle blow-off typically start

Covers the cutouts and joints in the first course so run-off cannot reach the deck

Fiberglass-reinforced asphalt construction, the same material class as the field shingles it sits under

Straight factory edge produces a consistent, even line along the eave and rake

Works under standard three-tab and laminated architectural asphalt shingles

Packaged by the bundle for straightforward take-off by linear foot of eave and rake

Applications

Starter course at the eaves of asphalt shingle roofs

Rake edges where perimeter sealing is specified

New residential steep-slope roofing over underlayment and drip edge

Tear-off and re-roof work on houses, garages and dormers

Low-slope-to-steep transitions and small outbuilding roofs finished with asphalt shingles

Product Details

Brand: GAF

Product Type: Starter strip shingles

Material: Fiberglass-reinforced asphalt shingle

Adhesive: Factory-applied sealant strip

Roof Type: Steep-slope asphalt shingle roofing

Location On Roof: Eaves and rakes

Unit Of Sale: Bundle

Product Line: GAF Pro-Start (GAF's starter strip line supplied at this bundle coverage)

Specifications

Size

120'

Brand

GAF

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1012/7743/4195/files/gaf-120-ft-starter-strip-shingles-gafs.webp?v=1790734539
