A gin block is a single-sheave rope block used to hoist buckets of mortar, brick, block and tools to a working level. The grooved wheel turns on a central axle inside a steel frame, and a top hook or shackle lets the block be hung from a scaffold frame, a beam clamp, a davit or a gin pole.

Rope is reeved over the wheel and hauled from the ground, either by hand or through a powered hoist, so material can be lifted straight up the face of a building without carrying it on a ladder. The deep groove keeps natural or synthetic fibre rope seated in the sheave and reduces chafe against the side plates.

Gin blocks are consumable jobsite rigging and should be treated as such: keep the sheave turning freely, check the frame and hanging point for distortion or wear, and match the rope diameter to the wheel groove.

Key Features

  • Single-sheave block with a grooved wheel that carries fibre or synthetic hoisting rope
  • Steel frame with side plates that retain the rope in the sheave groove
  • Overhead hanging point for attachment to scaffold tube, beam clamp, davit arm or gin pole
  • Wheel rotates on a central axle to reduce friction and rope wear during hoisting
  • Sold individually so blocks can be added as a hoisting setup is expanded

Applications

  • Hoisting mortar tubs, brick and block to masonry scaffold levels
  • Raising tools, buckets and small materials to upper floors during construction
  • Chimney, parapet and facade repair work from a gin pole or davit
  • Roofing and restoration jobs where material must be lifted up a building face
  • General jobsite rigging where a simple rope-over-wheel hoist is needed
