The A23 is one of Simpson Strong-Tie's A-Series framing angles \u2014 a short, formed steel angle bent to 90 degrees and punched with fastener holes on both legs. It is set into the inside corner of a wood-to-wood joint and nailed or screwed through both faces, so the connection is carried by fasteners loaded in shear through steel rather than by toe-nailed fasteners alone.

Angles of this kind are used wherever two framing members meet at a right angle and the joint needs mechanical reinforcement or simply needs to stay square: blocking to joists, nailers to plates, studs to sills, and repairs to joints that have opened up. Because the angle fastens from the face of the corner, it installs into existing framing as readily as into new work, with no need to take the assembly apart.

Fastener type, quantity and allowable loads for a given model are published by Simpson Strong-Tie, and the connector should be installed with the specified fasteners in the specified holes. Sold individually.

Key Features

  • A-Series framing angle, model A23, from Simpson Strong-Tie
  • Formed to a 90-degree bend so both legs seat flat against adjoining framing members
  • Galvanized steel connector
  • Both legs are prepunched for the manufacturer's specified nails or structural connector screws
  • Holds right-angle joints consistently square compared with toe-nailing or screwing at an angle
  • Fastens from the face of the corner, so it suits retrofit and repair as well as new framing
  • Fastener schedule and published values are model-specific and issued by the manufacturer
  • Sold as a single connector

Applications

  • Reinforcing 90-degree wood-to-wood connections in stud and joist framing
  • Fastening blocking, bridging and backing between framing members
  • Attaching nailers, ledger blocks and furring to framing
  • Repairing corners and joints that have separated or racked out of square
  • Holding built-up assemblies square during and after fastening
  • General carpentry, shop fixtures and jobsite fabrication in wood
