The head is the horizontal top member of a hollow metal door frame, spanning between the two jambs to close out the opening and carry the frame's stop and soffit profile across the top of the door. It is supplied as a separate piece so a frame can be assembled on site, or so a damaged head can be replaced without pulling the whole frame.

Like the jambs it mates with, the head is roll-formed or press-braked from sheet steel into a profile with a stop and returns that wrap the face of the wall on both sides. The throat dimension is matched to the wall thickness it is going into, and the length corresponds to the door opening width. Knock-down heads typically interlock or tab into the jamb tops and are held by the anchors and the finished wall; welded frames have the head joint welded and dressed before finishing.

Steel frame components arrive with a factory prime coat and are meant to be field-painted after installation. Heads should be checked for level and for consistent clearance to the door edge before the wall is closed up, since a racked or crowned head is the usual cause of a door that binds at the top corner.
