The head is the horizontal top member of a hollow metal door frame, spanning between the two jambs above the door opening. On knock-down (KD) frames it ships loose and is assembled on site, with tabs or clips at each end that lock into the hinge and strike jambs once the frame is set in the opening.

Like the jambs it mates with, the head is roll-formed or press-braked steel with an integral stop and rabbet that receives the door and, where used, the head-mounted closer or hold-open hardware. Frame depth must match the wall thickness so the returns bear evenly on both faces of the partition.

Sold as a single piece so a damaged or missing head can be replaced without buying a complete frame, provided the profile, depth and gauge match the existing jambs.
