Polyurethane is a clear surface coating used to protect and seal interior wood. It cures to a hard transparent film that resists abrasion, moisture and household cleaners, making it the standard topcoat for floors, trim, cabinets and furniture once staining or sanding is complete.

This is the gloss sheen, which reflects the most light of any polyurethane finish and gives bare or stained wood a deep, wet look. Gloss also shows surface imperfections more readily than satin or semi-gloss, so the substrate should be sanded smooth and dust-free before the first coat goes on.

Polyurethane is normally applied in two or more thin coats with a brush, pad or roller, with a light scuff sand between coats to promote adhesion. It is a topcoat only and does not colour the wood, so any stain or dye is applied first and allowed to dry.
