Boring a door for a lockset or deadbolt takes two intersecting holes: a large cross bore through the face of the door and a smaller edge bore through the stile into it. This kit gathers the cutters and the hardware that drives them so the prep can be done on site with an ordinary drill rather than a shop setup.

The cutting elements are bi-metal, meaning high-speed steel teeth joined to a tougher alloy steel body. That construction holds an edge in wood, engineered cores and laminates, and survives contact with the thin sheet metal found in metal-clad and hollow metal doors, where plain carbon steel teeth dull quickly. The saws mount on a mandrel with a pilot bit that starts the cut on centre and keeps the saw from walking across the door face.

Sold as a single kit in a case or carrier, it is the standard approach for hanging new hardware on unprepped slab doors and for retrofit work where existing bores need to be enlarged or a second bore added.

Key Features

  • Bi-metal cutting edges: high-speed steel teeth welded to an alloy steel body for edge retention in wood and thin metal
  • Matched cutters for both the cross bore through the door face and the smaller edge bore for the latch
  • Mandrel with a pilot drill centres each cut and prevents the saw from walking on the door face
  • Runs in a standard corded or cordless drill; no dedicated boring machine required
  • Cuts hollow-core, solid-core, composite and metal-clad doors
  • Components stay together as a set, so the cutters, arbor and pilot are not sourced separately on the job
  • Supplied as a single kit, one per unit

Applications

  • Boring unprepped slab doors for knob or lever locksets
  • Adding a deadbolt above an existing entry lockset
  • Retrofitting or upgrading door hardware in occupied buildings
  • Turnover and punch-list work on rental and multifamily units
  • Field prep of interior passage and privacy doors
  • Enlarging or relocating bores when hardware backset or trim size changes
