Thompson's WaterSeal Clear Multi-Surface Waterproofer is a water-repellent sealer for exterior wood, concrete and brick. It soaks into porous substrates and leaves a clear, non-film-forming barrier that sheds water rather than sitting on the surface as a coating, so the texture and color of the substrate are left essentially as found. The manufacturer lists it for use as a wood sealer, brick sealer and concrete waterproofer.

Surfaces have to be clean and dry before application, and the splash test is the standard check on whether a surface needs treatment: sprinkle water on the substrate, and if it soaks in and darkens within a few seconds the surface is porous enough to seal. One light coat is enough in most applications, and the product goes on milky white and dries clear, which makes it easy to see what has already been covered. It can be brushed, rolled or put down with a pump-up garden sprayer.

Because it is a penetrating water repellent rather than a structural waterproofing membrane, it belongs on above-grade exterior work - it is not intended for below-grade use where hydrostatic pressure is a factor, and it is not a paint additive. Repeat the splash test annually to judge when the surface is due for a refresh.
