3-1/2 in. x 58 in. Oak Ball Top Newel Post
A newel post is the structural anchor of a stair balustrade, terminating the handrail at the bottom of the flight, at landings and at changes in direction. Everything else in the railing assembly depends on it: the post carries the lateral load transferred through the rail and the balusters, so it is fastened into framing or into a stringer rather than simply set on a tread.
This post is turned in oak, a dense closed-grain hardwood common in residential stair work for its stability and for the way it accepts stain. The ball top is a finished decorative terminal, so no cap or finial is added after installation. Machined square at the base for anchoring and hardware layout, it is supplied unfinished for staining or painting once the balustrade has been fitted and the rail cuts are dressed.
