The profile is applied horizontally to a wall, traditionally at the height where chair backs would otherwise mar the plaster or drywall, and now more often used as a decorative band or as the cap on wainscot and beadboard panelling.

The primed surface gives paint a uniform base and reduces the number of finish coats needed on site. Like all solid trim of this type, it is installed with finish nails into studs or blocking, mitred at outside corners and coped at inside corners for a tight joint that stays closed as the wall moves.
