The primed surface is a sanded base coat, not a finish coat. It is intended to be lightly sanded and painted after hanging, and it accepts latex or alkyd topcoats without further sealing. The slab ships without bore holes for a lockset or mortises for hinges unless prepped, so it can be hung left- or right-hand and machined to suit the existing jamb.

Flush slabs trim more forgivingly than panel doors: the stiles and rails at the perimeter allow a modest amount of material to be planed off the edges for width and height adjustment, though deep cuts will break into the hollow core.
