5/4 in. x 12 in. x 12 ft. Red Oak Board
Red oak is a ring-porous North American hardwood used where a board has to be worked, joined and finished to a visible standard. It machines cleanly, takes screws and fasteners without splitting when pilot-drilled, and glues reliably for edge-joined panels and wide tops.
The 5/4 nominal thickness is the traditional choice for stair treads, window stools, thick sills and heavy shelving, giving more substance than a 1x board while still surfacing to a stable, workable section. Wide boards in this thickness are typically ripped down or used full width as a single-piece panel.
The open grain of red oak holds stain well and produces the pronounced cathedral figure associated with traditional trim and cabinetry. As an interior hardwood with no preservative treatment, it should be kept dry, acclimated to the space before installation, and sealed on all faces once machined.
