As a coarse aggregate it provides the load-carrying skeleton of a concrete mix, reducing shrinkage and cement demand compared with a sand-only mix. Rounded stone also flows and consolidates readily, which makes it easier to place in thin sections and around congested reinforcement, and it drains freely when used loose as a bedding or backfill material.

Bagged aggregate suits patch work, hand-mixed batches and repairs where ordering bulk stone is impractical.
