Efflorescence is the chalky white haze that migrates to the surface of concrete pavers, wet cast units and some natural stone as moisture carries free salts and lime out of the unit and evaporates. It is cosmetic rather than structural, but it dulls colour and, if it is sealed over, it stays locked under the film. Gator Efflorescence Cleaner is Alliance Gator's acidic concentrate for dissolving that deposit out of the pores of the stone instead of just scrubbing the surface.

The product is supplied as a concentrate and diluted with water before use, then applied to a pre-wetted surface with a pump sprayer or watering can, agitated with a stiff bristle brush and rinsed off. Alliance Gator specifies a mix of four parts water to one part concentrate and notes that stronger mixes can discolour pavers, that the product is formulated without hydrochloric acid, and that it should not be used on pavers less than 60 days old.

Cleaning is the step that decides how a sealer performs. Removing efflorescence and penetrated dirt first lets a paver sealer soak into open pores and bond properly, and restores the unit to its natural colour before the finish goes down. Alliance Gator also calls for freshly installed polymeric sand to cure 48 hours above 59 degrees F with no rain before this cleaner is used.
