Welded wire mesh is a flat sheet of steel wires laid in a grid and resistance-welded at every intersection. It is set in slabs, topping pours and site-cast concrete to distribute shrinkage and temperature stresses, holding cracks tight rather than letting them open and step.

Sheet mesh is supplied flat rather than rolled, so it lies where it is placed and does not have to be unrolled, cut and weighted down. The 2.9 designation refers to the W-number wire size used in welded wire reinforcement styles. Sheets are lapped at the edges, tied, and supported on chairs or bolsters so the steel sits at the intended depth in the pour.

Key Features

  • Steel wires welded at each intersection for a rigid, dimensionally stable grid
  • Supplied as a flat sheet, so it stays put on the subgrade without springing back
  • Square grid pattern distributes shrinkage and temperature stress across the slab
  • Wire size designated 2.9 in the welded wire reinforcement W-number system
  • Cut and bent on site with bolt cutters or a cut-off saw
  • Lapped and tied at sheet edges to maintain continuity of reinforcement
  • Placed on chairs, bolsters or dobies to hold position within the concrete depth

Applications

  • Slab-on-grade for garages, basements and utility floors
  • Concrete driveways, walkways and patios
  • Topping slabs over metal deck or precast
  • Equipment pads and generator pads
  • Curbs, aprons and site concrete flatwork
  • Repair pours and slab replacement sections
