Polyurethane is a clear, film-forming topcoat used to protect interior wood from abrasion, moisture and household chemicals. It cures to a hard, transparent film that leaves grain and stain colour visible while taking the wear that the wood underneath cannot.

This is the semi-gloss sheen, which reflects some light without the mirror surface of a full gloss. It is the usual choice for trim, doors, cabinets and furniture where a little shine is wanted but surface imperfections and dust should not be emphasised. On floors and other horizontal surfaces it hides traffic marks better than gloss.

Polyurethane is applied over bare, sanded wood or over dry stain in thin coats, with a light scuff sanding between coats so each layer bonds to the last. Read the can for the thinner, recoat window and cleanup solvent that apply to this particular formulation.
