Nominal one-by-four pine board, a general-purpose softwood board sold in a standard eight-foot length. Pine boards of this type are surfaced on four sides and sold at nominal dimensions, so the finished thickness and width measure slightly under the stated size.

Pine works easily with hand and power tools, takes nails and screws without pre-drilling in most cases, and accepts paint readily when primed. Knots and resin pockets are normal in pine board stock and should be sealed before finishing if a uniform painted surface is wanted.

Because it is untreated, this board is intended for interior work or protected exterior locations unless it is primed and painted on all faces.

Key Features

• Solid pine, a softwood that cuts, planes and fastens easily
• Surfaced four sides with eased or square edges typical of board stock
• Nominal sizing, with actual thickness and width slightly under the stated dimensions
• Takes primer, paint and stain; knots benefit from a stain-blocking primer
• Untreated, so best suited to interior or painted and protected applications
• Light in weight relative to hardwood boards of the same size, simplifying overhead and single-hand work
• Sold individually by the piece

Applications

• Interior trim, casing and baseboard backing
• Shelving, closet build-outs and storage cubbies
• Furring, blocking and nailers behind finish materials
• Face frames, cleats and simple built-in carpentry
