Red oak is a domestic open-grained hardwood with a pronounced ring-porous figure, and it is the standard species for residential trim, stair parts and thresholds where the finished work is stained rather than painted.

The material machines and sands cleanly, takes stain and clear finish evenly, and holds screws and nails well when fasteners are predrilled near ends and edges. Because the piece is solid sawn hardwood rather than a veneered or finger-jointed product, edges and faces can be reworked on site \u2014 ripped, coped, rabbeted or eased \u2014 without exposing a core of different material.

Like all kiln-dried hardwood, it should be stored flat and allowed to acclimate to the interior of the building before installation so that seasonal movement is minimized after finishing.
