A solid red oak newel post in a plain square profile, used as the structural anchor point for a stair balustrade. The newel carries the handrail at the bottom of a flight, at landings and at turns, and takes the lateral load that the balusters alone cannot.

The square section is left unturned and unfluted, which suits Craftsman, Shaker and contemporary stair work and also gives a clean blank for a site-applied box cap or ball top. Oak takes stain evenly and holds crisp arrises where the post is mortised or drilled for rail and fillet, and it can equally be primed and painted where the post is part of a two-tone stair.

Posts of this type are normally installed over a mounting hardware kit or dowel screw fixed to the framing, then trimmed at the top after the rail height is set.
