The head is the horizontal member that spans the top of a knock-down hollow metal door frame, tying the two jambs together and forming the upper rabbet the door closes against. It arrives as a separate piece so the frame can be carried into place flat and assembled around a finished opening rather than set before the walls close up.

Like the jambs it mates to, the head is roll-formed steel with a returned stop and soffit, notched and tabbed at each end so it locks to the jamb legs and squares the assembly. The throat dimension is sized to the wall it wraps, so the head must match the jamb depth of the frame it is being fitted to.

Hollow metal heads are used with commercial hollow metal or wood doors and are typically finished with a factory prime coat ready for field painting.
