Step flashing is the piece that keeps water out where a sloped roof runs into a vertical wall. Each piece is pre-bent to a right angle so one leg lies on the roof deck and the other turns up the wall, and the pieces are installed one per shingle course rather than as a continuous strip.

Because each piece laps the one below it, the assembly drains like the shingles themselves: water running down the wall is carried onto the top of the shingle course below and off the roof, instead of tracking behind the siding and into the sheathing. It is fastened high on the roof leg with a single nail so the fastener sits under the next course, and the wall leg is left free to be covered by housewrap, siding or counterflashing.

Sold as individual pieces, so quantities are figured from the length of the wall intersection and the shingle exposure being used.
