Concrete masonry unit molded from cast concrete for load-bearing and partition work. Units of this size are laid in running bond with mortar joints to build up walls, backup wythes and foundation stems, with the finished wall thickness set by the block's width.

Concrete block is dimensionally stable, noncombustible and resistant to insects and rot, which is why it is used for below-grade stem walls, fire separations and interior partitions in commercial and residential construction. Cores can be filled with grout and reinforcing steel where a stiffer, heavier wall is needed, or left open to reduce weight.

The gray face takes parging, stucco, direct-applied thin masonry veneer or furring and drywall, so the same unit serves as both structure and substrate.
