Solid pine step stock milled for use as stair treads. The 5/4 nominal thickness gives the dressed board the substance needed for a walking surface, and the 12 in. nominal width covers a typical tread run with a single piece, avoiding a glue joint down the middle of the step.

Pine is a softwood, so it works easily with standard carpentry tools: it can be ripped to the finished tread depth, cross-cut to the stringer-to-stringer dimension, and its front edge eased, rounded or given a bullnose profile to form the nosing. It takes fasteners without pre-drilling in most cases and accepts stain, paint or clear finish, though as a softwood it dents more readily than oak or maple and is often specified where treads will be painted or carpeted.

Supplied as long stock sold by the piece, so multiple treads can be cut from a single board with the offcuts used for risers, skirt pieces or blocking.
