Solid red oak stair tread stock for building or refinishing interior stairs. Oak is the traditional species for treads because of its hardness and closed, even grain, which holds up to foot traffic and takes stain and clear finish evenly.

Treads are supplied as long blanks that get cut to the finished width of the stairwell on site, then set on the stringers or over an existing tread with construction adhesive and fasteners. A single length yields two or more treads on a standard run, and the surplus is often ripped down for landing nosing or riser caps.

The front edge is milled with a rounded nosing that projects past the riser, matching the profile expected on finish stairs. Because the material is solid hardwood rather than a veneered panel, edges and the nosing can be sanded, routed or re-sanded years later without exposing a core.
