It is an oil-based, soft-setting thread sealant with a smooth, uniform consistency that stays put on the threads instead of running off the fitting during assembly.

Applied to the male threads before make-up, a pipe dope of this kind fills the spiral leak path left between engaged threads, lubricates the joint so it draws up tighter with less effort, and leaves a coating that helps the connection come apart again later without galling or seizing. Because it does not harden, the joint can be broken and remade during service work. The gray color reads as a close match to metal pipe on exposed runs.
