A volute is the scrolled starting fitting that terminates a stair handrail over the bullnose or starting step. The handrail rises from the newel, curves into the volute's spiral, and the scroll sits above a cluster of balusters set in a curved radius, giving the bottom of the flight its finished, turned-out termination.

This fitting is machined in oak, an open-grained hardwood that is standard for stair parts because it takes stain and clear finish evenly and matches oak handrail, treads and balusters. It is supplied in the left-hand configuration, meaning the scroll turns to the left as you face up the stairs; handing must match the stair so the volute and its cap balusters fall correctly over the starting step.

Volutes are joined to the handrail with a rail bolt and dowel connection, then sanded flush at the joint so the profile runs uninterrupted from the scroll into the straight rail. The fitting is normally ordered in the same rail profile as the run it serves.
