Hurricane ties are the small formed-steel connectors that tie the roof framing down to the wall below, so that uplift from wind does not simply lift rafters or trusses off the plate. The H2A is Simpson Strong-Tie's single-sided version of that connector: it wraps from the side of the rafter or truss, across the top plates, and down onto the wall stud, making one continuous mechanical connection through all three members. Because it picks up the stud as well as the plate, a separate top-plate-to-stud connector is not needed at that location.

The part is stamped from galvanized steel and pre-punched throughout for connector nails, so installation is a nailing operation with no drilling, welding or field modification. It works as one link in the continuous load path that carries roof loads down through the walls, which is why ties of this type are installed at repetitive framing intervals rather than in isolation. Fastener type, quantity and hole pattern are specified by the manufacturer for the model and should be followed exactly; hurricane ties are not a substitute for solid blocking at the bearing point.

Key Features

  • Single-sided tie that makes a direct connection between the rafter or truss, the top plates and the wall stud
  • Capturing all three framing members eliminates the need for a separate top-plate-to-stud connector at the same location
  • Forms part of a continuous load path intended to resist wind and seismic forces
  • Formed from 18-gauge galvanized steel
  • Pre-punched nail holes throughout; installs with the connector nails specified by the manufacturer, with no drilling or field welding
  • Bent-leg geometry lets the tie be nailed off from one face, which suits work from a ladder or from inside the wall line
  • Installed in repetition at each rafter or truss bearing rather than at isolated points
  • Sold individually

Applications

  • Rafter-to-top-plate and truss-to-top-plate connections in light wood-frame roof construction
  • Roof-to-wall tie-down work in high-wind and coastal framing
  • Retrofit and re-roofing work where roof framing is being tied back to the wall studs
  • Garages, porch roofs, additions and accessory structures with conventional stick framing
  • Shed and outbuilding roof framing where a nailed steel connector replaces toe-nailing alone
  • Repetitive connector layouts specified on residential framing plans
