Surfaced-four-sides red oak board for interior trim, casework and furniture work. S4S means the stock has been planed smooth on both faces and both edges and ripped to a consistent width, so it arrives square and ready to cut, joint and fasten without further milling.

Red oak is an open-grained North American hardwood with a pronounced ring-porous figure and a pinkish to reddish brown cast. It machines and sands predictably, holds screws and joinery well, and takes stain and clear finish evenly, which is why it remains a standard choice where trim has to match existing oak millwork or floors.

Sold as a nominal one-inch board, dressed thickness is slightly less than the stated size, which is normal for surfaced hardwood lumber.
