Corner bead is the trim applied to outside corners of gypsum board before taping. It gives the corner a straight, true edge to finish to and protects the vulnerable arris from knocks once the wall is in service.

The bead is fastened over the corner at regular intervals, then the flanges are coated with joint compound and feathered out onto the board so the raised nose sets the finished corner line. Standard 8 ft. lengths suit typical wall heights and door and window returns, and lengths can be cut with snips or a hacksaw to fit shorter runs.
