The head is the horizontal member that spans the top of a hollow metal door frame, tying the two jambs together and forming the upper stop the door closes against. It arrives as a separate piece for knock-down assembly, so the frame can be carried through finished openings and put together on site rather than set as a welded unit.

Formed from sheet steel with a return leg and integral door stop, the head matches the profile and throat of the jambs it is paired with. Corner tabs or notched ends interlock with the jamb heads to square the assembly, and the wall opening depth dictates which throat size is used so the frame fits flush to both faces of the partition.

Heads are normally supplied in a shop primer that takes field paint once the frame is set, anchored and the joints are dressed.
